The Intro to Metalsmithing Workshops at Cottonwood Silver and Lapidary are a series of workshops designed to continue offering topic-based metalsmithing classes for our community. With a growing interest in the craft and shifting opportunities in the metroplex, we now offer 3 different project-based Intro Workshops that can be taken in any order with some situational context. Read on!
THE CORE THREE CLASSES:
1. *Intro to Metalsmithing: RING
Learn how to size, cut, file, solder, and set a cabochon stone on your ring stacker set. Choose between a matte or polished finish and walk out the door wearing your rings.
2.Intro to Metalsmithing: PENDANT
Learn how to make a bezel around an irregular shaped found object (size restrictions are 1” with a relative flat bottomed object. River stones, broken pottery, cabs from gem shows, wood, and bone are acceptable. Crosses and flower-esque complex shapes are not.), solder your pendant and bail together, choose between chain or leather cord, and walk out the door wearing your new necklace.
3. Intro to Metalsmithing: EARRINGS
Learn stamping, rolling mill texture application, dapping (doming metal), sweat soldering, and how to make your own ear hooks. Walk out the door wearing your new earrings.
SPECIALTY WORKSHOPS:
NEW! Fix It- Jewelry Repair Workshop- *please see additional info below.
* The Ring class was the original introduction class which Lyndsey has taught in Wyoming, Oregon, and now Colorado. From there, 85% returning students filled the pendant classes. We now offer the EARRING class which add to existing skills or can be taken as a new student.
Classes are regularly priced at $195 for new students which includes all equipment, tools, AND materials. Returning students always get $30 off your next workshop regardless of the time of year!
4 students per class
Tuesday/Thursday evenings, 5-8 pm
All equipment, tools, and materials provided (mostly brass, some silver)
Handouts with terms, helpful tips, and resource guide provided
*Thank you for understanding the $10 increase from last year in cost, adjusting for inflation and Stripe fees.
Whether this is a fun (and challenging) workshop to take with a friend or the beginning of your silversmithing career, you will have newfound skills and resources for further growth by the end. Or is it the beginning..?

Fix It- Jewelry Repair Workshop:
This is a unique jewelry class experience… This workshop offers a unique hybrid of:
Repairing your own jewelry (within reason)
Creative problem solving to repair jewelry so that it becomes wearable or giftable
Combining elements together from different pieces
Using jewelers’ specialty tools
Me stepping in for tricky maneuvers to get ‘er done
Sharing insider knowledge into the jewelry industry so you can know a bit more about what you have and what you are buying.
What this class is not:
Any kind of platinum or 14k/18k gold repair (although I like talking about them)
Your great grandmother’s diamond ring sizing
One-of-a-kind Tiffany’s sterling silver box or silverware repair
An appraisal for insurance, the only way to repair jewelry, my opinions as “truth”
Repairing highly valuable or nostalgic pieces
What you’ll need to submit BEFOREHAND to LyndseyRieple@gmail.com:
Photos or videos of a collection of broken and/or unwearable jewelry
What you’ll need to bring:
The collection of broken and/or unwearable jewelry. Please do not bring only one item to repair. This would be a boring class for you. We will need to have a variety of items to make this work. Because, inevitably, not all jewelry is repairable in the way we desire. The good news is that I will provide some context around that!
A light attitude and gusto for experimentation. Again, this class is not for those items you want done right- bring those to a jeweler. They have insurance, laser welders, ultrasonic cleaners, magnification, and just enough crazy to take on the responsibility.
Why am I teaching this specialty workshop?
As a jeweler, and sometimes a confused one, I think there is a large gap in knowledge between the consumer and the jewelry professional, and sometimes the jewelry professional and the larger players (i.e. manufacturers). I get that we don’t always want to know how the jeweler, mechanic, plumber, builder, or carpenter does their job- we just care and trust that they do. Working in the jewelry industry, I think it’s important to know a little more about it, and repairs are the perfect gateway to that.
Have questions? I would! Don’t hesitate to ask or bring up a concern by emailing me at LyndseyRieple@gmail.com
